Transferring My Domain Registration Away From GoDaddy
Before attempting to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy, you must complete the following steps.
Important!
- After purchasing a domain, you must wait 60 days before you can transfer it to a new host. This is not a HostingInIndia specific rule, but rather a rule implemented by ICANN, the organization that governs domain registrations. For more information, please review ICANN’s Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars.
- Wait for 24-48 hours after unlocking the domain to make sure it takes effect in WHOIS.
Step 1: Update Contact Information for Domain
The contact information for your domain needs to be up-to-date so that the EPP/Authorization Code can be emailed to you. To update your contact information:
- Log into your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Navigate to Contact Information, and then click Edit.
- Review and/or update the contact information for accuracy.
- If the contact details for the different account types are different, uncheck the Use for all contact types, and then review section type for any errors.
- Click Save when your changes are complete.
Step 2: Remove Privacy Protection from the Domain
If privacy protection is enabled on the domain name when the transfer request is initiated, the domain transfer will automatically fail. All WHOIS information must be publically visible in order for the transfer to go through successfully.
Privacy protection can be removed by clicking Remove privacy at the bottom of the Contact Information section, and then confirming that privacy should be removed from the domain.
Step 3: Unlock the Domain
If the domain name is locked, the transfer request will automatically fail as the domain must be unlocked prior to initiating the transfer. To unlock the domain:
- Log into your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Scroll down to Additional Settings, and then click Edit next to Domain lock.
- Set the toggle to off. It will take a few moments for the update to show.
Step 4: Request EPP/Authorization Code
Most domain registrars require an EPP/authorization code in order to transfer a domain name. This provides an extra layer of security and protects against unauthorized transfers. To request an EPP/authorization code:
- Log into your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Scroll down to Additional Settings, and then click Edit next to Domain lock.
- Navigate to the bottom, then click on Get authorization code.
- The authorization code will then be sent to the domain’s Administrator email address on file.
